Building Kids Confidence: Helping Them Shine Through Play

One of my absolute favorite things about teaching theatre is watching confidence grow in real time. There’s almost always that one kiddo who walks into class holding back—quiet, unsure, maybe sticking close to a parent or avoiding eye contact. They might not want to speak at first. They might not want to jump in. And that’s okay. Truly.

We start with play. Silly games. Movement. Pretend. No pressure. No “right” way to do things. And slowly—sometimes so slowly you almost miss it—that child begins to open up. They laugh. They try a sound. They take a step into the circle. By the end of the session, they’re raising their hand, sharing ideas, or proudly performing with the group. Not because they were forced—but because they felt safe, supported, and seen.

That moment—when a shy child steps out of their shell through play—is why I do what I do. Theatre gives kids permission to explore who they are, take risks, and discover their voice in a joyful, welcoming space. And those confidence boosts don’t stay in the classroom—they follow them home, into friendships, learning, and everyday life.

Fun & Effective Confidence-Building Activities to Try at Home or School

The best way to build confidence? Sneak it in through play! When confidence-building activities are part of everyday routines, kids don’t even realize they’re learning big life skills—they’re just having fun. Here are a few simple, joy-filled activities parents, teachers, and caregivers can use at home or in the classroom.

1. Role-Playing Games (A.K.A. Pretend Play)

Pretend play is one of the most powerful tools for building confidence. When kids get to step into a role, they can practice social skills, try out new ideas, and express big emotions in a safe, playful way.

Try this: Act out everyday scenarios like ordering food at a restaurant, meeting a new friend, or being the teacher for the day. Take turns and let kids lead the story—bonus points for silly voices! My kids loved pretending having a store and they would find items around the house they would sell!

Why it works: Builds communication skills, reduces social anxiety, builds empathy, and helps kids feel ready for real-life moments.

2. Creative Arts & Crafts (There’s No Wrong Way!)

Art is confidence-building gold because there’s no single “right” answer. When kids create freely, they learn to trust their ideas and feel proud of what they’ve made.

Try this: Set out art supplies and invite kids to choose what they want to make—no instructions needed. Celebrate the process, not the product.

Why it works: Builds self-esteem, encourages independence, strengthens fine motor skills, and lets kids say, “I made this!”

3. Movement, Games & Team Play

Moving our bodies helps kids feel strong, capable, and connected. Group games and physical play teach teamwork, perseverance, and how to try again—even when something feels tricky.

Try this: Play tag, set up a relay race, dance it out, or join a local sports or movement group. Keep the focus on fun, not competition.

Why it works: Builds resilience, supports social skills, increases body confidence, and helps kids feel proud of what their bodies can do.

Helping Kids Build Positive Self-Talk & a Brave Mindset

What kids say to themselves matters—a lot. That little voice in their head can either cheer them on or hold them back. The good news? We can help kids turn that voice into their biggest fan! Teaching positive self-talk gives children the tools to face challenges with courage, curiosity, and confidence.

Try this together:

  • Daily affirmations (make it fun!)Create simple, kid-friendly phrases like “I can try,” “I am brave,” or “I’m learning.” Say them in silly voices, act them out, or turn them into a chant or song.

  • Model the magicKids learn by watching us. When adults use kind, encouraging language about themselves—especially after mistakes—kids learn to do the same.

  • Celebrate effort, not just the win. Cheer for trying, practicing, and sticking with something—even when it’s hard. Confidence grows in the trying, not just the outcome.

When kids develop a growth mindset, mistakes stop feeling scary and start feeling like part of the adventure. And that’s a powerful shift

Making Confidence-Building Part of Everyday Life

Confidence doesn’t come from one big moment—it grows through small, everyday experiences. When confidence-building is woven into daily routines, kids feel supported and capable without even realizing it.

Easy ways to build confidence daily:

  • Set small, doable goals: Help kids choose goals they can reach—and celebrate every win, big or small.

  • Create a safe, supportive space: Listen, validate feelings, and let kids know their thoughts matter.

  • Give meaningful responsibilities: Age-appropriate tasks help kids feel trusted and proud of what they can do.

  • Encourage connection & play: Playdates, group activities, and creative classes help kids practice social skills in a joyful way.

These simple moments add up to a strong foundation of self-belief that kids carry with them everywhere.

Resources That Support Kids Confidence Growth

You don’t have to do it all alone—there are so many wonderful tools that support confidence-building through play, creativity, and connection.

  • Books: Read stories together that explore emotions, bravery, and self-belief.

  • Apps: Kid-friendly apps can help introduce mindfulness, calming strategies, and positive thinking.

  • Community programs: Theatre classes, camps, clubs, and workshops give kids a chance to grow confidence in a fun, supportive group setting.

When children are encouraged to explore, try, and be celebrated for who they are—not just what they achieve—they build the confidence and resilience they need to thrive on and off the stage.
